Mesothelioma Lung Cancer, Definition, Reasons And Treatment

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the membrane lining various organs in the body, known as the mesothelium. The mesothelium is primarily found in the chest and abdomen.

The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs. This type of tumor often develops silently within the chest cavity, making it difficult to detect in its early stages.

Patients typically seek medical attention when they experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, decreased physical capacity, and weight loss without intentional dieting. It is important to investigate further if unexplained weight loss occurs, as it could be indicative of an underlying problem like cancer. Mesothelioma is commonly seen in individuals who have been exposed to asbestos, with approximately 8 or 9 out of 10 patients reporting a history of asbestos exposure.

Smoking itself does not cause mesothelioma, but individuals who have been exposed to asbestos should refrain from smoking, as it significantly increases the risk of developing lung cancer. There is often a long period of time between asbestos exposure and the formation of cancer, with an average lag period of 50 to 60 years. Additionally, individuals who have cared for patients exposed to asbestos and subsequently developed mesothelioma may also be at an increased risk.
